Civil Legal Assistance for Disaster Victims

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, The Louisiana Civil Justice Center (LCJC) is traveling to Cameron and Calcasieu parishes to provide emergency legal assistance to disaster-affected families.    Next week, LCJC Staff Attorney Harrece Gassery will host a series of “walk-in” clinics to provide direct services to residents with questions and concerns about disaster related legal challenges.  Individuals seeking help should bring all relevant documents and state ID.

If constituents of the affected parishes are not able to attend on the dates listed below, LCJC is happy to help via its toll-free disaster hotline (1-800-310-7029). On the hotline, LCJC staff provides assistance with issues involving FEMA, insurance claims, landlord-tenant issues, successions, home-repair contracts and consumer-protection matters.   Legal assistance for Spanish-speaking callers can be arranged via a callback appointment. Referrals to appropriate local or state agencies will also be provided by the hotline volunteers.

Community members should be aware that there are some limitations on disaster legal services.  LCJC attorneys will only assist self-represented litigants on their civil legal issue and will not assist individuals with criminal issues. In the case that the LCJC attorney is unable to help the individual will be given referrals to the appropriate agency.
